SOS Medical Centres Dassa-Zoume and Natitingou

Mission: In addition to building families for the children in need and helping them shape their own future, SOS Children's Villages Benin strengthens vulnerable families to prevent child abandonment through these healthcare facilities, lays an emphasis on the rights of everyone to a better state of health. For this purpose, the SOS Medical Centres work together with local communities to help them improve their socio-sanitary conditions.

Overall objectives: to contribute to the well-being and health improvement efforts for the most vulnerable populations and to the valuing of the healthcare policy within the country.

Specific objectives:
The SOS Medical Centres are aimed at:
  • Ensuring the proper management of their human, material and financial resources.
  • Gearing clients to appropriate facilities and services in time for better care.
  • Providing for emergency services in accordance with their capabilities.
  • Contributing to solving diagnostic problems faced by local health facilities by yielding reliable biomedical analysis results.
  • Caring for the Orphans and Vulnerable Children and the poorest populations in the context of preventive and curative medicine.
  • Ensuring that their interventions are in compliance with the norms and standards of SOS Children's Villages and those of the healthcare.

Intervention Areas:

The SOS Medical Centres offer holistic care for children, SOS staff and residents of the neighbouring communities of SOS Children's Villages. The Minimum Package of Activities offered is aimed at meeting the medical, educational, therapeutic and nutritional needs of orphans and vulnerable children, and the entire community.
It includes the following elements:

Basic curative care:

  • Tackling priority problems faced by local communities: general and paediatric consultation, basic care and ordinary surgery.
  • Screening, treatment and referrals of severe cases: Malaria, acute respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, malnutrition, gastrointestinal disorders, anaemia

Additional laboratory examinations

  • Basic haematology, parasitology, bacteriology, biochemistry and
  • Voluntary screenings and biological advice
  • Check-ups

Education sessions on HIV / AIDS.

  • Specific Communication for Behaviour Change (CBC)
  • Psychosocial support
  • Orientation and facilitation for support with Retro Anti-Viral (ARV)

Consultation for healthy children (0-36 months).

  • Systematic weighing
  • Establishment of the curve Weight / Age
  • Monitoring psychomotor development

Food and Nutrition Security.
  • Promotion of breastfeeding
  • Promoting the consumption of iodized salt
  • Nutritional Demonstrations
